Graduate medical education (GME) is the required formal residency training for medical school graduates to obtain their full medical license and become board-certified physicians. GME also includes subspecialty training (fellowships).
These GME programs prepare physicians to practice independently and specialize in a particular area of medicine. They provide opportunities for clinical experience, academic support, and research participation.
These programs are established to provide a curriculum based on the core competencies, including patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, intercommunication skills, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practices.
